My first film of Saturday morning---er, early afternoon, was the James Rasin documentary on Warhol’s favorite glamour girl (for a few years anyway, you know he tossed people away like dirty Kleenex) Candy Darling, Beautiful Darling. This was actually the first film that jumped out at me when I was originally looking at the schedule for this year’s festival. Months earlier I had seen another Warhol superstar based documentary, Superstar in a Housedress, about transsexual playwright and actress Jackie Curtis and seeing snippets of the beautiful within that documentary made very curious to find out more about this enchanting, and always so perfectly coiffed, transsexual… much to my dismay, the meuvie was just “alright” and honestly something I could have waited to see in a few months on NetFlix Watch Now.
What was rather interesting, and for me a touch unsettling, was the relationship between Candy and Jeremiah Newton who was Candy’s “best friend” and now basically her self-appointed archivist. I’m not sure exactly was put me off on him, perhaps it was how in certain scenes he reveled in the fact that because he was Candy’s lapdog (my words, not his) he was able to just breeze in and out of The Factory with no problems or that he mentioned that because he was clinging to Candy (again, my words) that he was able to go into the super awesome back room at Max’s? To me, I felt that part of him used her to hang out with “the cool kids” because he himself was probably a big ol’ loser when he was younger. It is true that without Jeremiah’s help and copious tape recordings, photos, etc. that this documentary would have never been able to have so much info about Ms. Darling in it… right?
I honestly feel that with all of the great interviews given by Factory members and others in that “circle” at the time, the meuvie would have been just as enjoyable. Although now that I think about it, the one good thing that Jeremiah did bring to the table were Candy’s diaries (read by the lurvely and talented Chloe Sevigny), that did give us a little insight to the feelings that she not only had, but the ones James (her real name) also felt.
My opinion of this is that when it comes out on DVD rent it, but be prepared not to be blown that much away.
