Future Balearica

Seductive basslines, echeoy pianos and jangly guitars prevail in this chilled, summertime compilation that mixes up indie, disco, folk and ambient, yet manages to seamlessly fit the Balearic tag.

Behind the album are FETE, one half of which is Sean Brosnan - also responsible for the Future Disco series that has featured contemporary disco artists Greg Wilson, Prins Thomas, Tensnake and Todd Terje amongst many others.

Future Balearica showcases a very diverse bunch of current artists at their laid-back, summery best. The XX even make an appearance on track 2 with the languid ‘VCR’, their lackadaisical vocals perfectly at home here.

The pace picks up a little with the smooth disco of Mario Basanov’s ‘Caribbean Girl’, followed by more downtempo electronica, including ‘The Island’, a track by FETE themselves.

The breezy mood continues till the fantastic ‘Love The Night Away’ by DJ Kaos and remixed by Tiedye, a definite high point. Black Lodge, Kaine, and Café del Mar resident Cantoma aka Phil Mison pop up with more typically Mediterranean-sounding tunes.

Things mellow out towards the end with The Project Club’s ‘Leaves Of Millfield’, however Icasol’s ‘Ongou’ (the Idjut Boys remix previously heard on Dixon’s Temporary Secretary) breaks up an otherwise slow tempo.

The mix takes an unexpectedly acoustic, semi-folky turn with Iain Archer’s ‘Canal Song’ and Lady of the Sunshine’s eponymous track, before the whispery Loch Raven by Animal Collective winds things down, ready-for-bedtime style.

Well mixed and varied, Future Balearica is eclectic enough to interest people beyond a Sunday morning chill out session. Both "chill and warm" as the tagline goes.

Future Balearica is out on Monday 16th of August on Needwant Recordings. Future Disco will be hosting their own arena at Tiesto in the Park this Friday.
