Yesterday, the G received this e-mail from someone called bmoreowl15: "Hey Gutter. Love the blog! Have you seen Baltimore Magazine's new "night life" blog? ZZZZ....can u write something (sic) about it?" Well, we wrote back to bmoreowl15 explaining that our snark needs to be in context, we don't hit and run (often). But after chatting with "owl" we found out that he was a B-more nightlifer, early 30s, who works in the entertainment industry and is up on the local blog scene. At first, we asked him to do a column and he said "no...too bizz" Then we asked if he would spend time looking at local "Nightlife blogs" and give us a quick review. "NP" Well, this morning we got the results! Whoo boy.... Ladies and Gentlemen...bmoreowl15. Hey. Thanks for letting me do this. First, after living in NY and abroad I can tell you B-more would benefit from more nightlife blogs (that means YOU Gutter!) [Actually we are, it's called Nocturnal Charm and will be up soon-JMG] . Enough with the music ones already. The main issue I had with the blogs I reviewed was there was little "life" in many of the "night life" blogs. They were more like glorified press releases, focusing on not on what the writer did, but more like a PSA. Go here and do this for a "fun time"..blah..blah..blah... The blogs ran the gamut from great (three of them) to out and out yawners (which was why I hit up Gutter in the first place). I'm out about 3-4 nights a week and I think that the city has a pretty good nightlife vibe going on and deserves more coverage. Anyway, on to the reviews. I'll rate these from 1-5. Five being best etc... Likes: the bloggers are hot looking hipsters in glasses. Umm..that's it really. Dislikes: "The city blog for county living!" Generic name. Generic skyline pic. Generic entries that you can read elsewhere in the Bmoresphere. I can't beleive that the city's main magazine is JUST getting around to night life blog. I get B-mag @ my Safeway. For a city mag it's OK. But it suffers from the same affliction most of the publications in this town do. Edgy as an old butterknife and all the spice of an adult day care center luncheon. It's your mom on FaceBook. Rating: 1
Likes: I want her. Don't know her, but I love reading Molly. I check into Metromix like once a week to see what's up. And I always read her. Witty (Duck, Duck, puke loved it), hip and writes pretty much daily, which was the main problem with most of the blogs. No consistancy. Dislikes: Needs more gossip. I think Molly would be perfect for a gosspiy night life blog and I would love it if she went to more places all over the city. Rating: 5
Booze and Old Bay Likes: good writing. interesting topics (sometimes). Liked that pickle shot. Dislikes: Too much Fratmosphere. To Whit: " My super-awesome write-up is available on Metromix's main page. Go there for a minute-by-minute break down of my sprint through Federal Hill's Miller Lite stockpiles.." Also, I would like to propose a moritorium on the following: ANY titles to do with National Bohemian (I'm not saying "Natty" oop, just did), Old Bay seasoning, Charm City, crabs &___, and the Utz girl. C'mon people, be original, people around here don't need "identifible" words over and over again. They know what's up. Rating: 3 Brian Lawrence Live Likes: First, I confess that I had never heard of this mag until it was pointed out to me by Gutter. I asked around if anyone knew about the site, but I mostly got blank looks especially about thier blogs (they have four). That being said, I kinda liked this blog. It's mature, straightforward, detailed and didn't try too hard to be a "blog." It's mostly about parties (some I attended! Points.) and people who are well known throughtout the city. I will mos def keep reading it. Dislikes: Ironically, it's the same as my likes. It's a little too straightforward for me. Needs some Zazz! If I were writing a blog for a mag called Style, I would have a girl (or boy) on each arm and be wasted on martini's everynight. And then write about it. A little too much G in this GQ type blog. Rating: 4
Likes: First of all, I've been following this blog since it was created two years (?) ago. In my opinion, since then it has trascended a "night life" blog. It's now the only night life INDUSTRY blog in the city. The writing is OK, but the topics are for the most part always good. And it's a daily thing, unlike most of the other blogs of this type in town. What I like about this blog is the comments. Sessa, by I guess just writing consistantly, has managed to be a real force in the local bar industry. This is not me kissing ass. This entry about Canton bar closings was the talk of the weekend. I remember going to a few bars in my neighborhood and they were talking about it. That's what a good blog is supposed to do , in my opinion. Dislikes: Yeah, I know it's got to be daily, but some of those micro entries are useless. I would like to see Sessa get back out there at night... Rating 5
Gwyneth Carmichael Baltimore Nightlife Examiner Likes: unique topics Dislikes: very inconsistant. Infoblogging. The last post was in Feb. So maybe the blog is dead. Rating: N/A (she hasn't posted since Feb. 28) After spending a few hours looking through all these blogs I wanted to point out two things. 1) Sen needs to get thier non music bloggers back. Good stuff there. 2) CITY PAPER NEEDS TO BRING BACK BAR SCARS. This was the blog that started it all and now it's gone. Funny, all about nightlife, not about beers, closing times etc... women on the town. So for the sake of being a fan, I'm going to rate it.
Likes: Snarky, lively, personal yet makes me want to go out to the places she's talking about. I like the way that Anna Ditkoff found unique characters to write about. Something missing from most of the above blogs. Dislikes: It's gone. Rating: 5+
THANKS bmoreowl15! Got a favorite nightlife blog that was missed? Let us know!
